Ben Shaw, 15, dies after being found pinned under PCYC gym equipment

Surrounded by family and friends, the 15-year-old boy who was found pinned underneath gym equipment at Pine Rivers PCYC on Tuesday night has died in hospital.

Ben Shaw's family issued a statement on Sunday after the teenager died at the Lady Cilento Children's Hospital.

“Ben passed away yesterday afternoon with his family and friends around him," the statement said.

"Ben was able to leave a legacy and donate his organs and tissue, giving life to others.

"We’d like to thank everyone who has been involved in Ben’s care, including all friends and family."

Social media has been flooded with tributes to the young man, including one from his rugby league club.

"On behalf of Pine Central Holy Spirit Rlfc, I would like to send our heartfelt condolences to the Shaw family," club president Sharon Hickey wrote.

"Yesterday afternoon they lost their beautiful Ben and has been able to leave a legacy by donating his tissue and organs to enable recipients have their lives saved and changed forever as a result.

"As a club, we will be assisting to see the world through Ben's eyes and ensure his legacy lives on in support of his parent's and family."


Friends took to social media to pay tribute to the teenager.

"Ben Shaw, you helped me through so much! I'm so thankful for it! You were my best friend and you will be missed so much!" one wrote.

"I will never forget all of our good times together and how we always used to hang, you where (sic) always there for me rest in peace and fly high my angel you will be missed."

Another posted: "R.I.P Ben Shaw taken way to (sic) early brother, did not deserve what happen (sic) like they say good die young, its (sic) not fair one bit but.. will always and forever rember (sic) you, see you one day."

"Never thought id (sic) have to say this so early in life but rest in peace brother," a third wrote.

It is understood Mr Shaw had been working out on the bench-press at the Pine Rivers gym about 8pm when equipment came down on his neck.

A staff member reportedly found the teenager about 20 minutes later, pinned under a 98-kilogram benchpress.

He was given first aid by staff and other gym members before paramedics rushed him to Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.

According to PCYC gym and fitness centre policy and procedures, children under the age of 16 must complete an induction with a parent or guardian and must be supervised while at the gym.

PCYC officials said the Pine Rivers branch would remain closed until further notice and said they would co-operate fully with the investigation.

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland were looking into Ben Shaw's death and could not comment on an ongoing investigation.

"Operators of fitness centres that provide 24-hour access must ensure the safety of their operations, its members and the public. This includes ensuring the safety of equipment and periodic monitoring of the facilities," A WHSQ spokesman said.

"There are no specific health and safety laws for operators in the fitness industry. However, all persons conducting a business or undertaking (e.g. gymnasiums/personal trainers) must comply with their general duty of care under the Queensland Work Health and Safety Act 2011.

"They must ensure the health and safety of all workers at work and the health and safety of all other people (e.g. clients) who might be affected by the work.

"This includes providing and maintaining a safe work environment, safe plant and equipment and information, training, instruction or supervision necessary to protect all persons from risks to their health and safety arising from work carried out as part of the conduct of the business or undertaking."

The Queensland Police Service were also involved in the investigation.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

(雪兰莪.八打灵再也4日讯)一名热爱健身的20岁学院生昨晚疑在疲劳状态下,扛举108公斤杠铃时不慎失手,结果颈骨压伤身亡!

这起罕见命案于昨晚8时许,发生在雪州安邦再也美拉华蒂花园一间健身中心。

据了解,死者是来自柔佛峇株巴辖的黄宗劲(译音),生前就读马来西亚艺术学院(MIA)。

事发时,死者疑已疲劳却扛举108公斤杠铃,结果杠铃脱手压伤其颈部,导致他当场死亡。

据知死者爱好健身,过去的体重一度达99公斤,经过锻炼后减至84公斤,如今身材健硕,更计划参加健美先生比赛,未料竟发生如此悲剧。

死者也是一名兼职地产经纪,其上司在得知他死讯后,在脸书发帖文哀悼,并称死者是团队里的大宝贝,他的离去令人心痛,且一再表示不会忘记他爱玩闹的模样和笑声。

这名女上司也表示,多次叮咛死者要小心,但他总是粗心大意。

安邦再也警区主任韩查助理总监受询时证实此案,警方已将案件列为猝死案处理。

(安邦再也4日訊)練健身,練到死!

一名打算參加健美比賽的20歲學院生,日前在健身房臥舉槓鈴時一時失手,被108公斤重的槓鈴壓中頸骨身亡!

疑因疲勞難破極限

死者黃宗錦(譯音)是健身愛好者,在馬來西亞藝術學院(MIA)求學之餘,也兼職地產經紀。

死者平時有定時上健身房健身,事發時疑因疲勞,而突破極限失敗,被脫手的槓鈴重壓頸骨,當場斃命在躺椅上。

此宗罕見命案于昨晚8時許,在雪州安邦再也美拉華蒂花園1間小型健身中心發生。

据了解,死者數年前體重約100公斤,之後養成健身習慣,使體重驟降至約80公斤,體型也越來越健碩。

呼叫3友人幫忙

據死者當時也在健身房的巫裔友人向《中國報》披露,事發時,健身房包括死者共有5人在場,其中3人在祈禱室祈禱,他則剛好出外買煙。

“我離開前,曾勸死者等我回來再鍛煉,孰料當我回到時,發現槓鈴壓在他的頸項,他已沒有意識了。”

他見狀立即呼叫3名友人出來幫忙,並合力移走槓鈴,也致電醫院求助。

醫護人員抵達現場時,宣布死者已斃命,遺體隨后被送往附近醫院剖驗。

死者父親接獲噩耗后,立即從柔佛峇株巴轄家鄉趕到醫院,抵達后與率先趕往醫院的妻子抱頭痛哭。

之后兩夫婦和死者胞姐及死者友人進入停屍間認屍,步出停屍間眾人皆傷心痛哭,停屍間一片愁雲慘霧。

死者遺體完成剖驗后,家屬于午間辦理領屍手續,遺體送家鄉峇株巴轄安葬。

加重訓練量沒找人支援

死者自行加重訓練量,卻沒有找人支援。

死者的巫裔友人德尼(24歲)透露,案發時,死者是臥舉共重108公斤的槓鈴,分別是兩邊啞鈴各45公斤及槓棍本身18公斤。

他說,在一般的情況下,如要突破平時極限,應該要有旁人支援,以在自己體力不支時,有人可以幫忙支撐槓鈴或其它健身器材。

他說,他曾聽死者說過打算參加一些健身中心舉辦的健美比賽,可能死者試圖突破自己的極限,以更好的狀態參與比賽。據他所知,死者平時不會舉那麼重。

他披露,死者擁有多年的健身經驗,所以他相信死者不是錯誤使用健身器材,才導致悲劇發生。

“死者很可能是因為事發時疲倦,才不幸失手。”

每週健身5天

死者每週前往健身中心5天,每次至少練2個小時!

德尼披露,死者熱愛健身,每次都是獨自來到健身房,在健身期間極為專注,鮮少與人交談。

“不過,死者在完成自己的健身后,就會和其他健身愛好者聊天,話題總是離不開健身的事。”

他說,死者為人風趣,在別人的眼中是一個“開心果”,孰料竟英年早逝。

記者週三(4日)下午前往事發健身房時,發現健身房仍照常營業,不過當時只有1人在內,但他拒絕受訪。

雪健身中心也發生暴斃案

無獨有偶,雪州梳邦再也一間健身中心,在上週五(29日)也發生了一宗跑步機暴斃案。

一名華裔男子於當天傍晚約6時30分,在該健身中心的跑步機跑步時,疑突然心臟病發,跌落地面后斃命。

據了解,死者是該健身中心的會員兼常客,平時經常作運動,但沒有聘請健身教練。

死者倒地后,健身中心內的人曾經為他急救但不果,中心負責人在確定他斃命后,馬上召來警員,死者遺體較後被送入沙登醫院太平間。

離21歲生日不到兩週

死者多才多藝,會彈鋼琴且熱愛唱歌,他的離世,導致他有很多的“來不及”,包括慶祝12天后來臨的21歲的生日,以及下個月的畢業典禮。

死者的生日是在10月15日,即事發當天的12天后,死者的女友及友人原打算為他慶祝21歲生日,孰料他活不到這一天。

熱愛唱歌的死者,生前在馬來西亞藝術學院(MIA)報讀音樂系,生前已接近完成課程,畢業禮定于今年的11月4日舉行,但他已來不及參加。

根據死者的社交網站顯示,死者生前與女友非常恩愛,經常上傳兩人的合照,同時相信死者人緣也不錯,時常與一大班朋友出外並合照上傳至網絡。

此外,死者也有上傳與友人一同自彈鋼琴及自唱的視頻,死者的歌聲也獲得不少友人留言讚賞。

教練:80kg舉重108kg
沒人支援試不得

80公斤舉重108公斤具有高難度、高危險性,沒有旁人支援不可一試。

資深健身教練黃俊軒(35歲)接受《中國報》訪問時說,一個體重80公斤的人,要臥舉重達108公斤的槓鈴,不是容易的事,因為那相等於其個人體重的1.35倍重量。

“不過,若這個人接受過很長時間的訓練,要舉起108公斤的重量,是有可能的。”

危險性高

擁有15年健身教練經驗的黃俊軒說,健身房內的所有機械訓練都有一定的危險性,尤其是當他們嘗試圖破自身的極限,嘗試越舉越重時,危險性就越高。

他說,健身新手應該要聘請健身教練,一來學習正確的姿勢和健身常識,二來則降低健身損傷的幾率。

“即使是已經熟練的健身老鳥或達人,當他們在嘗試自我圖破時,也應該要有夥伴的陪同,以防萬一。”

他說,疲勞、狀態不好和休息不夠等等,都會導致健身意外的發生。
